The easy solution for sightseeing is go to your hotel tour desk and book a dat sightseeing tour. The cost will be reasonable, and you will visit the major sights. I always sightsee on my own, but I have a Thai wife and no my way around. For a first time visitor, the day tour is a reasonable choice. You should be able to arrange this at your hotel. The Royal Palace, Wat Po, and Wat Arun can all be easily visited by taxi. If you take a taxi, ask somebody at the hotel to write your destination in Thai to give to the driver. Always take a meter taxi, and I always flag down a moving taxi, except when a bellman at a hotel calls a taxi from the hotel taxi rank.

The day sightseeing tour should still allow a day for shopping and a day for exploring. I like walking in Bangkok. There is always something to see. I would suggest a walk down Sukhumvit Rd. one day or evening. Food options are immense and the variety is huge. You can take the Skytrain to Chatuchak.

Have a great trip.
