Hello TELFinKrabi

i have been reading lots of reviews to try and get advice on my trip, as i am coming with my mother. i woudl usually be more relaxed and just see how things go when out there, but am nervous of making sure she is happy. If you are able to help i would be v grateful - it seems you are in the know-how, but i am happy for advice from anyone. Ive booked in for our first 3 nights at Railay Bay Resort. All sorts of mixed reviews though. Do you know if construction work is finished? We are coming in Feb. Or would you suggest Ao Nang over Railay Beach? (quieter better for my mum, but she is not THAT old). Is anywhere more reasonably priced? As nowhere seems that cheap! After Railay we are thinking to head to Koh Lanta looking for some decent beach hut bargains...is there none of this on West side Railay? Thanks.

Hello TELFinKrabi

If your mother is into laying on the beach all day then Railay would be great but if she enjoys walking around a small town with the option of a beach or a massage or a cafe then Ao Nang would be a much better idea. In the evening she would probably enjoy it more with the choice of restaurants and shops.

  • Hotels in Krabi????

Im stuck on deciding which hotel to choose in Krabi, can anybody recommend anything for me, I will be looking at a nice 3 1/2* to 4*. Close to the beach and resturants etc...

All feedback would be much appreciated.

    thanks

    Hotels in Krabi????

Current favouties of mine, in Ao Nang, are Pakasai (because of the lovely staff and the new outdoor buffet set in the garden that they%26#39;re doing 3 times a week), Duang Jai (a new resort but well laid out and peaceful) and the Ayodhya Suites (when it opens!).

    Krabi

Arriving on Dec 22nd for 8 days,Would like to know how the weather will be as never been before,Also what are the chances of getting a really good suit made while we are there, dont have anough time to get one made in Bangkok ,as ive been told Better tailors

    Krabi

Weather should be hot and sunny. Currently we%26#39;re getting a few fabulous thunderstorms in the afternoons to clear the air but they last 15-20 minutes only.

As for the tailors, there are plenty to choose from and mostly run by only one or two families so the quality is pretty uniform.

  • Departure tax

How much is the departure tax? When do you pay for this? Alongwith your ticket or at the airport?

    Departure tax

Hi my guess is that you are talking about departure tax when you are leaving bangkok.

Departure tax is paid at the airport when you depart.

It used to be 500 Bat but I heard that it has increased to 700. Not too sure about the increase.

    Departure tax

    The current situtation is:-

International departure tax is 500 Baht. Paid in Thai Baht.

It is paid at the airport BEFORE you go through immigratation, there are kiosk with big notices in the Departure Hall.

Domestic currently is included in the ticket.

BUT TIT next year (March) it is reported that it will go up to 700 Baht international and I believe 50 Domestic Both to be collected at the airport.

It is also reported that the Taxi Tax will also increase to 100 Baht at the same time.

Hope this clears it for you

so am i safe to say that it will still be 500 till the end of the year?

    spear

You should be ok till the end of the year but TIT.

The projected date of increase was March 07 but I%26#39;ve not seen anything since the initial news release

International departure tax is 700thb from 1st February 2007. Thai Airways have included it in their ticket price if flight booked after 1st November 2006. Others may follow suite. If not included you pay in cash prior to deparure as you do the 500thb now.

Up to 31st. Jan 2007 Thailand Airport Tax for International destinations is payable to the Airport Authorities in Thailand upon departure. (500 Baht).

International departures from 01st. Feb. 2007 onwards, the Airport Tax will be included in the Total Amount Due payable when a booking is made via any of our booking channels. (700 Baht).

Bookings made as of 4th. September 2006 for 01st. Feb. 2007 onward travel, the Airport Tax has been included in the Total Amount Due.

There are no changes for the payment and collection for domestic departure as the Airport Tax has always been included in the Total Amount Due.

    Thanks mosegrisen

It seems that my memory is only so so as I couldn%26#39;t find the origonal report.

I am sure all airlines will do it but as I always say TIT.

Thanks everyone.. since we travel back on 1st jan 07, i am assuming we would pay 500 baht each and though we re travelling thai airways it might not be included in the air fare yet...

One day in BKK with kids - where to stay?

    Hi all,

After a week in BKK, we%26#39;ll be going to a beach, then returning for one day, since our flight out is at 6am. I%26#39;d like to stay somewhere more interesting than an airport hotel, since traffic shouldn%26#39;t be a huge issue the morning of our departure. It doesn%26#39;t have to be in the city, but should be someplace where we can walk around or do something with the kids. A decent restaurant would be nice too.

    Thanks,

    temple

One day in BKK with kids - where to stay?

Sukhumvit area is always my choice. There are ample restaurants, shopping, a park, access to Skytrain. Depending on how much time you have on the last day and what might entertain the kids, Silom is also an option. My suggestion is choose a mid price, or even less expensive hotel, since you will not be in the room much except to sleep and will not even eat breakfast at the restaurant.

I always stay at the Regency park on Sukhumvit 22, about 40-45 USD booked through a website. There is a park with a playground for my son, shopping for my wife, a cigar star and plenty of places for a beer for myself, all within 5 minutes walk. There are dozens of other suitable hotels though.

    Day Tours

We are reaching Bangkok in the late evening of Dec 10. We have only 3 days in BKK. Do you think we should book our tours in advance or reach there and decide?

Which is a better model, line up places one wants to visit and use public transport to get around or hire a car and a guide for the full day?

    Thanks

    Sanjay

    Day Tours

If you want to book a tour, I would simply visit the hotel tour desk. I do not think you will save any money to book in advance.

I am very willing to make my own way using public transport or taxis. If you will use a taxi, ask a hotel staff member to write down your destination in Thai, since many taxi drivers will not understand english.

  • Adaptors

    Hi,

We are stayin at the Horizon Karon, do big hotels like this normally have western adaptors so we can charge our digital camera batteries? If not is there somewhere in phuket we can buy an adaptor?

    Ta :)

    Adaptors

Yes to both questions, but a universal travel adaptor always comes in handy.

    Adaptors

DeeCait, I took Cathy%26#39;s advice and have bought an adaptor for AU$11 and will take a power board with me so that we have plenty of outlets for charging camera%26#39;s etc. If you are not sure which adaptor to take Cathy has a photo of it on her travel pages. Its a round plug with two round prongs.

Thanks for that Wells, if you are anything like us it comes in handy to have a small powerboard as we take, cameras, mobiles, dvd player, etc.

The type of adaptor is on link below.

    Hi,

we are travelling from the UK so its handy to know that we need to get the rounded 2 prong adaptors, and not the flat ones that are used in the states. Can anyone confirm what the voltage is - we use 240 in UK but I know most adaptors are 110, which means that if we get a basic 110voltage adaptor, it may not be able to carge our mobiles / cameras etc without a voltage convertor?

    Voltage in Thailand is 220v.

which is excellent for my straighteners! ;) It takes hours in the US to heat them up!

I am a bit confused about the voltage thing..... Can any Aussies tell me if our stuff (hairdryers, straightners, mobile ph charger, camera charger etc) with a normal adaptor work with the voltage?! Do I need to check voltage on my stuff?!?!

How does that all work? YES I am blonde and braindead from my last exam today!!!!!

Emjay, Everything will work fine with the normal adaptors.

    Cathy

So what is all the voltage talk? Is Oz and Thailand on the same voltage or it just doesnt matter?! :-)

    Fisherman's village

I%26#39;ve heard a mention of Fisherman%26#39;s Village. Does anyone have any information on this?

    Fisherman's village

There would be one at just about any area or province near the sea.. are you asking about Samui... or?

    Fisherman's village

Some where that can be reached on a Bangkok to Kanchanaburi tour. That%26#39;s all I know.

    Kids Clubs in Phuket

What hotels have great kids clubs with organised activities. We are not able to stay at Holiday Inn, as it is booked out !

    Kids Clubs in Phuket

    hi chris

You can try the Movenpick Resort at Karon Beach. They advertised they have the biggest Kids Club in Phuket. We are looking at booking this hotel because the kids club have different ages groups right up to 17 years old with internet, playstations, etc. Sounds good to me - happy kids happy parents.

    Good luck.

What would you recommend? Phuket, Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, other? We are both 26, so nightlife is somewhat important. But so is seeing the beauty and culture of Thailand, and relaxing in some of the best hotels.

    Thank you for any feedback.

We thought it a bit hot early evening and thought we would enjoy a few coldies around the pool. We have changed our reservation to Royal Phawadee Village.

    Booking on line

We are looking to book a hotel in Phuket. Could anyone recommend a good, safe website that offers great deals? Thanks

    Booking on line

    Hi Showponi,

Find a hotel that you like and them e-mail the hotel directly. That is what we did and we got a better deal than those other websites that offer various hotels.

maybe someone can give you a name of a site. I looked at Asiarooms.com and from what a found through this %26amp; other forums, it was not a very reputable site if you have to cancel and get your money back.

    Hope this helps somewhat

    Cheers

    Booking on line

It depends on hotel policy, some hotels (such as the IC Group which includes Crowne Plaza, Holiday Inns, Intercontinental etc) guarantee to be the cheapest on the net so its worth booking direct. However this is not the same for all, we have booked the Pathumwan Princess (Bangkok) %26amp; Banthai (Phuket) for January and for these hotels it was cheaper to book through sawadee.com as the rates were cheaper and offered free breakfasts etc and a better room for the money.

So basically I would contact the hotel and then check the online sites too. The good thing about sawadee.com is that you only have to pay a deposit when you book and the balance 2 weeks prior to departure (asiarooms.com has to be paid upfront, to be fair though I have never had a problem with them).

    Good luck.

    sawadee, sawasdee, res24, precisionreservation, hoteltravel,bestthaihotel, asiarooms,asiatravel, bangkokian, circleofasia, morethailand, Worldres, holidays2thailand, planetholiday, asiabesthotel, atsiam,directrooms, farangs, thailand-hotelguide, asiareservations.net, asiahotels.net, thailandhotels.net, www.resorthotel.net,

    Hi,

Before you try any of the others ring Qantas Holidays direct 131415 and get their quote as they are very competitive with the others. For instance 9/10 nights at the Merlin Beach in Deluxe room in April only $495 each including buffet breaky. All the internet price where higher as it is a holiday at that time of year and in high season so we scored very well. We booked Asiarooms.com for the Pathumwan Princess and get buffet breakfast for only $2.80 extra compared to qantas holidays. Just surf the web and try them all plus Qantas and compare.

    Hope this helps

    Pauline

    Perth

With the exception of our first trip we have always made our reservations directly at the hotel.A lot depends on the establishment itself. Many hotels have special internet rates and-as someone mentioned-large hotel chains (Starwood,Marriott, etc.)have lowest price guarantees.

What was decisive for us is the fact that most agencies require deposits-in some cases even prepayment-whereas paying at the hotel means that in most cases you can cancel without penalty on 24 hours or a week%26#39;s notice.

    Laundromats?

Are there places for self-service laundry in Phuket? Debating whether or not to plan for it. I dont want to pay through the nose for laundry at like a hotel or anything. But I%26#39;d rather do laundry so I dont have to overpack for our 3-wk trip. Please advise!

    Laundromats?

Hi Ektk, I have never seen a laundromat in the Kata Karon areas maybe there is one in Patong. The thais have a great laundry service away from the resorts %26amp; very cheap. What i do is buy a small packet of laundry powder from 7 11 %26amp; wash out underwear %26amp; costumes, boardies in the bathtub. The rest we take a bag of washing every couple of days to the laundry lady %26amp; pick up the following day. If we are running out of t shirts we would just go %26amp; buy more. Three weeks in thailand wow you are very lucky. Have fun. CJ

    Laundromats?

Depending on the area you are staying will be the price you pay for getting your laundry done. Hotels charge per item. There are many places on the street that charge per kilo. We payed 50bht in Kata and they do a very good job. Don鈥檛 waste your time in Thailand doing the washing theirs better things to do.

    hi there

we used to take laundry powder with us to Phuket then we discovered the ladies outside the resorts that do the washing

for you at a very cheap price. Just look for the signs everywhere

advertising laundry, you will quickly find a favourite to keep going back to. It really is not worth even washing your smalls as their

so cheap. washing comes back clean and sweet smelling.Oh to have someone at home to do this job!

But seriously go out to the street they are a lot cheaper than the hotel laundry services. And you you don%26#39;t have to sit and watch

your washing going round and round.

We stayed at The Sheraton Grande Laguna and on the beach in a little hut is a laundry service-cost per item.

Very cheap, beautifully clean and back to us in two days all ironed pressed and folded in bags.

It was lovely to go home with hardly any dirty laundry and clean clothes you could put straight away.

As people have said there are better things to do on holiday than the laundry and the prices on the beach are at least a quarter of the price that the hotel charges.

    Hi

We stayed at the Holiday Inn at Patong and In the markets behind called the big O Patong was a lady who did washing for 10baht a piece of clothing. It all came back clean and pressed and sealed in a plastic bag.Her clothing shop was near the circular bars.

    TElfinKrabi your advice!

We travel to Krabi in February so may be the Sofitel Krabi is already opened and tested by other guests!

Please tell me: is the beach near the Sofitel really good to swim and walk? Or do you suggest another one nicer?

We are lso thinking of renting a car to drive around but is it safe or is it better to use a cab with a local driver?

    Thanks for all!

    Clara

    TElfinKrabi your advice!

By Feb it should be more Guest-friendly as I guess the work will be more focused on inside the rooms than the exterior. The beach is, sadly, nothing like the photos and advertising. At high time it%26#39;s lovely to walk along it but at low tide it%26#39;s rocky and I would%26#39;nt want to walk out to sea unless I had special reef shoes on!!! That said, the beach at the Sheraton was like this too and they spent a lot of money taking the rocks out so maybe SSpfitel will do the same.

Driving around is very safe and easy, but then I%26#39;m from the UK and we drive on the same side of the road. Many people rent small motorbikes but if that doesn%26#39;t suit you then it%26#39;s quite easy to hire a driver. Hey......if I have no students booked that month you can hire me!!!!!!!!

  • Quieter place in Patong - Any recommendations?

My partner and I have 9 nights booked in March 2007 and are having trouble deciding where to stay.

I%26#39;ve read through the patong-to-stay-or-not-to-stay forum (which was great -thank you all) and think we could only stay in Patong in a hotel/resort away from the centre of town and noise etc.

Can someone recommend somewhere quiet; not too pricey; where the beach is close and not crowded; walking distance to the main action (views a bonus)?

Or is Karon a better option? - Thanks in advance - K

Quieter place in Patong - Any recommendations?

Try the Horizon Beach Hotel in Patong. Close to the beach , not to pricey , and whats even better is that if you%26#39;ve had enough of the noise etc. of Patong you can relax by the pool and the outside seems to be a million miles away.

    Enjoy

Thank you to you all. I%26#39;m also looking for somewhere in Surin or Karon/Kata that%26#39;s more for couples with less children. Any tips?

    Hi

I%26#39;m staying at the Seaview Patong in February; it%26#39;s at the extreme southern end of Patong beach, with just a road in front. I chose it mainly for the same reasons you have stated - and I REALLY wanted a sea view, not be overlooking a pool with (possibly!) hundreds of noisy kids!

Check out the views, rooms etc at www.seaviewphuket.com.

Also check it out on the TA hotel reviews

  • Best time of year for diving in Krabi

We are going to Thailand next year. I am getting a bit confused as to the best time to go.

We are going to Krabi, my husband is a diver and what I would like to know from other people%26#39;s experience of diving, what time of year is best for visibility and not raining. Is there any problems with the currents?

Best time of year for diving in Krabi

January through to April when the sea is calm and the visibility good. Either side of that and you might only see sand being blown around!

Best time of year for diving in Krabi

G%26#39;Day from Aonang. I worked here for 2 years as an instructor - and to be honest, any time apart from September is good. The local diving in our low season (April - August) is awesome - and there would be no reason to go to Phi Phi.

    Enjoy!

Wedding in Samui but what about the Honeymoon?

Hi, we are getting married in Ko Samui next April and naturally plan on having our Honeymoon after the wedding and flying from Bangkok to our honeymoon destination

A few options we like the idea of are

    Bali

Hawaii (although I am not sure about flights from Bangkok)

Mauritius (again not sure about flights from Bangkok)

    Java

Obviously Bali and Java are nearer but if anyone has any advice, tips on a destination within reach of Thailand that they could recommend that would be really helpful!

    Cheers.

    Ben%26amp;Sarah

Wedding in Samui but what about the Honeymoon?

May I ask why you don%26#39;t honeymoon in Thailand? If you are coming all the way for the wedding why not honeymoon here. From Koh Samui you can honeymoon in several different places across Thailand such as Koh Lanta or Koh Lak.

Personally I am not a fan of Bali nor Java.

Mauritus is beautiful and prefered it to Hawaii.

Other suggestions would be Fiji or New Caledonia which are closer to Australia.

Otherwise if you are willing to go London - Thailand - Hawaii why not go to an island in the Bahamas?

Wedding in Samui but what about the Honeymoon?

It really depends on you budget and how many flights you are prepared to take.

well i dont have 10%26#39;s of thousands but dont mind going that extra mile (scuse the pun) for a great location. Is Mauritius accessible from Bangkok?

May I ask why you didnt like Bali and Java?

I disagree about Bali, it%26#39;s great, however, like the previous poster has said, if you%26#39;re getting married in Koh Samui why not honeymoon there too? there are some lovely hotels, have a look at the Sala Samui, or Poppies .

If you don%26#39;t want to stay in Koh Samui why not try Phuket or Krabi?

You can find some lovely places to stay.

You are spoiled for choice weatherwise in April, good luck!

I think it is a bit crazy not to honeymoon in Thailand. We just got married in Samui and after the wedding etc, all we wanted to do for a little while was relax. I don%26#39; t think I would have wanted to get on a plane elsewhere - and I would definitely avoid going anywhere where you are going to get further jetlag.

I think Bali is lovely - not sure about the weather in April though - and there are some amazing resorts. Another alternative is somewhere like the Datai in Langkawi, Malaysia or Pangkor Laut Resort in Malaysia. Beautiful hotels in Ko Lanta in Thailand if you want to stay on a beach but go to another place in Thailand. Another option is to stay in one of the resort hotels in the north - take a look at the Four Seasons, Chiang Mai, the Mandarin Oriental Dhara Devi or the Anantara in Chiang Rai.

You didn%26#39;t say where you are getiing married in Samui but Tongsai Bay Seaview Cottages are so romantic! I would honeymoon in Samui or at least for part of the holiday. There is also Sila Evason which is aprt of the evason hideaways group. Amazing place and perfect for that honeymoon retreat but a few days there is probably enough. gorgeous though. I have just returned from both hotels!

Hello, sorry for not replying sooner, hectic with work and the wedding allready!

We stayed at Rocky Resort (www.rockyresort.com) this August for 2 weeks in a Jr. beach front bungalow, we were knocked out by the quality and privacy of the resort, its not as large, contemporary and expensive! as Tongsai, which we visited on our wedding venue research and not as %26#39;stuck in the middle of it%26#39; as Poppies (Chaweng), which in all honesty I think may be a little over rated.

We loved Rocky%26#39; so decided that was the venue for us. So to answer your questions we have had 2 weeks on Samui already so hence going somehwere else around that part of Indonesia would be ideal.

Can anyone recommend a short haul flight from bangkok? i.e 3/4 hours? Or a luxury resort on the nearing Thai islands?

The Bali flight from BK seems too long, but what about Java, Borneo, Cambodia? Are these quicker to get too? Sorry so many questions!

Thanks for the invaluble feedback as ever.

    Ben%26amp;Sar :-)

Borneo is fantastic for an adventure packed trip you can do excellent trekking there, but I am not sure that is what you are after.

You could head to Malaysia as suggested by the other poster maybe Tanjung Jara Resort is my favourite resort in Malaysia www.tanjongjararesort.com/location.htm. I could suggest catching a Berjaya Air flight Koh Samui to Kuala Lumpur and spend a few nights in Kuala Lumpur staying at the Shangri-La which is my hotel of choice there and then catching a flight to Terrenganu where this resort is. It is just amazing!!!!

Shangri-La if it is affordable for you I would stay on the Horizon Club Floor the service, rooms and breakfasts are unbelievable!

Tanjung Jara is an amazing resort and very intimate. You can get bungalows that overlook the crystal clear sea. The service is very personalised the head chef comes out every night and cooks anything of your choice no menu! In addition the beach bbq is very romantic where you pick what you want and they bbq it infront of you. Just a fantastic place and option if you want to head to Malaysia. It is a very quick flight. Another plus Kuala Lumpur has excellent shopping.

Also very good diving and snorkeling here.

Flight to Bali is only 4 hours, and would be a good contrast to Samui.

    Electical appliances in Ko Samui

This has probably been covered before, but I didn%26#39;t find it. What kind of electrical plugs do I have to take to Ko Samui? I have read articles saying that both the 2 prong round and the two prong slit will work. But also that the 3 prong will work. What is correct? We are staying at the imperial boat house and I have German appliances. Thanks!

    Electical appliances in Ko Samui

Hi, I live in Spain and the plug situation in Thailand is the same as here - I used my normal 2 prong round plug - you can buy these in the local supermarket very cheaply. Have a great holiday.

Klong Prao Beach + Klong Prao Resort?

    Hi!

Any info about Klong Prao Beach (I think it is the next beach to south from White sand beach)? How is the water here? Clean? Clear? Nice and blue? is it very deep or shallow/save to swim?

And how is the ocean in July? very strong waves/currents?

Is there any shops + tailors + restaurants near Klong Prao?

Any comments about the hotel Klong Prao resort?

Klong Prao Beach + Klong Prao Resort?

In July it depend son the weather. One day it%26#39;ll be calm the next there will be metre high waves. It can be rough and people drown off Koh Chang in the rainy season every year, mainly due to the cirrents which arent noticeable from the beach.

There are often strong currents off Klong Prao beach, but the beach slopes gently into the sea so tou can feel the current on your legs when you walk into the water as the water is shallow, no sudden drop off.

Probably not too blue in July as if there ahve been stomrs at sea then it will be murky. ( Now the water is very clear.)

There are a couple of shopping plazas with snall shops, tailors, supermarket, tour agencies, restaurants etc at the north enf otg Klong Prao beach 10-15 minutes walk from Klong Prao Resort.

Go for the VIP Rooms or new bungalows at KP Resort.

Klong Prao Beach + Klong Prao Resort?

Have stayed at Klong Phrao Resort - not bad at all. The sea is very rough as a rule june - oct. it rained non-stop for eight days when we were there. i now go to Chang every dec/jan.....when the weather is perfect.

I stayed at KP Resort over a year ago (Aug) and I won%26#39;t be going back. I had been a regular customer of theirs; my brother got married there, with all the extra guests that involved.

Later I booked 2 rooms in August 2005 and set off to stay there. On the way there, the agent in Trat rang to tell me there was building work going on and if I wanted to cancel that would be OK. I explained that we would be arriving at 6 pm and unless she had somewhere in mind I would have to stay there for the night and as we were only staying 2 days there wasn%26#39;t much chance of finding another place without wasting the hole break.

Now the reason she had rung me is that I%26#39;d made a reservation directly with the hotel and they hadn%26#39;t informed me of the building work in progress. As a regular I%26#39;d asked for a discount and they offered me 50 baht...as it was the wet season but still without mentioning the building work. Now the agent in Trat obviously recognised my name as a regular and as soon as she realised who it was rang me to tell me, but even she didn%26#39;t point out the extent of the ongoing work. On arriving, the place was a total shambles.

There were buildings going up everywhere, excavators on the beach, machinery being operated everywhere

When I asked for a further discount as we couldn鈥檛 move out I was told that I鈥檇 already been given the maximum discount.

Whet irks me is that the hotel knew full well at the time they rented me the room that the whole place was running building site yet they felt perfectly justified in not telling me and charging nearly the full wet season rate, and to a regular customer.

BTW, when I say regular, I probably booked 18 rooms in as many months.

The trouble with Klong Prao is that so long as you don鈥檛 have a problem you will be OK but if anything goes wrong, there is little chance you will get it sorted. My room that time had several small faults...no TV, locks not working, but there was no chance of getting any of this fixed.....once you have paid that鈥檚 it....you gets what you get.....it may be OK but if something goes awry...you鈥檙e on your own.

I might add that the old charge in the wet was about 1800 to 2000 baht; as soon as they decorate, they told me they were going to charge 3500. This kind of pricing makes Koh Chang just about the most expensive destination in Thailand.

People coming from Europe think that this is cheap but if you compare like with like, KC is the worst VFM by far in the country.

So I will visit Koh Chang from time to time,....I鈥檓 extremely disturbed by the rampant overdevelopment of the place but I have friends who live there....

Oh yes...they did offer me compensation....they said next time I stay they would give me 1 night free.....so they spoil 2 nights, prove to be the kind of people I don鈥檛 want to do business with and then expect me to stay there again??? It鈥檒l be a cold day in hell before I stay at K Prao again....

    Whilko,

We had a bad experience there too which came back to mind when reading your post. We stayed there about four years ago (maybe three). A friend who had raved about the place when staying at songkran, told us all about the wonderful buffet breakfasts/seafood buffet dinners, great staff and so on. Well, when we went in august, low season obviously, on our way to that ';island'; restaurant they have, I stopped by to see the manager and asked if the buffet was on and he curtly informed us that we could ';choose from menu';. We had already paid for our meals in advance from BKK. There were about three main courses to choose from and they were buiding a new block just behind (yes at dinner time). That and the rain made us leave earlier than planned. But as i said before, we actually liked the room that have a sea-view at the front and the lagoon/mountains backdrop behind. Whew...long paragraph. Anyway, we also decided never to stay there again and I agree with your comments on Chang in general, though I do like the northern ends of both white sands beach and khlong phrao.

    B.Gas

Yes...the breakfast buffet at low season....mine was so bad I took photos!

It is the attitude that they don%26#39;t have to tell you that they are running with half the facilities, and once they have your money they don%26#39;t give a tinker%26#39;s cuss that really annoys me.

    khao jai!

Best hotel to stay in Bangkok.

We are traveling to Thailand for a month starting late December. We land in Bangkok and would like to spend a few days there before moving on. I would love to hear recommendations from people. We would like close proximity to the Subway/Skytrain, a pool if possible, and as always the price/feature is important. Our goal of course is to visit the sites and sounds of the City!

Best hotel to stay in Bangkok.

There are hundreds of decent hotels in Bkk. You need to specify a budget!

It%26#39;s worthwhile using an internet booking service to book, you%26#39;ll save heaps. Make sure you compare the various deals on each hotel because they do vary according to the booking service.

We have just spent several nights at the Holiday Inn Silom, which I booked at a last minute rate (but must be at least 5 days in advance) direct with the hotel%26#39;s internet reservations, and got a rate of US$63 with no breakfast (or would have been $75 with breakfast, and it%26#39;s a really good buffet). I had to book further accommodation when we were in Bangkok, and realized just how good this deal was.

There are plenty of reviews on this site for this hotel. We have stayed at quite a few hotels in Bkk, and I found the H.I to be of a high standard, spacious rooms with all the usual comforts. Location was good because Silom road has a Central dept store, street stalls at night, Silom Village (good for an intro to Bkk for tourists, with dancing, open air restaurant, crafts etc) and a BTS station so you can catch the skytrain to MBK mall for shopping.

    Hope this helps.

Best hotel to stay in Bangkok.

How much do you want to spend? Lots and lots of hotels in Bangkok. You can find air-conditioned hotel rooms from around 800 baht on up to 6000 baht per night.

Most air-conditioned hotel rooms will have private toilets, hot water, TV and security box availability - even those that start around 800 baht!

Google up the Landmark Hotel on Sukhumvit Road, it%26#39;s real close to the Nana Skytrain stop with lots of restaurants and street vendors around! You can probably find a room in the 3500 baht to 6000 baht range.

Or, Honey Hotel off Sukhumvit Road, Soi 19, close to a Skytrain stop and vendors. Air-con rooms starting around 850 baht. Honey Hotel has a pool. Fewer bars in this area if bars are a problem!

How much do you want to spend?

There are fan only rooms (no A/C) which start around 350 baht in Bangkok.) In smaller towns the air-conditioned rooms start around 300 baht on up.

How much do you want to spend?

The good hotels in my opinion are

    1)The Oriental

    2) The Peninsula

    3)The Shangri-la

    4) J W Marriott

    5)Conrad

6)Nai Lert Park a raffles managed hotel

Try Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit. Very central and close to transport. Good restaurants and facilities. There is a nice pool %26amp; gym.

Westin Hotel is in the same central location and slightly cheaper but less luxurious. How much do you want to spend???

I would recommend the Penninsula as the best hotel with a nice pool near the sky train.

The Shangri-la is a hair closer to the sky train and has a beautiful room, but is a slight notch below in my opinion. The penninsula feels more special.

The sofitel silom is a great hotel if the other 2 are out of your budget, but the pool is not great, so if that is important, skip it.

I can recommend both the Shangri-la and Silom Serene - 2 totally different hotels.

Shangri-la could be expensive in December, but the river front location is hard to beat and it%26#39;s close to the Skytrain. It has 2 pools and a bit of a garden around one of them - gives it a bit of a resort feel.

Silom Serene is a small hotel tucked away off Silom Road, but has good rooms. Pool is a bit small though. Short walk to the shops and Patpong Market and a few minutes walk to Skytrain. Very well priced. (I%26#39;m staying there next week.)

We just spent three nights at the Inter Continental - booked on their ';club'; floor. These aqre situated 30th floor upwards and you have access to the 37th floor lounge which must be the most lavish around. Three hours of free drinking time every evening with a view across the city - gorgeous. This is off season and we got the best rate off Sawadee - Bhat 7900 inc. taxes per night breakfast included at the Lounge. Last October we were at JW Marriot also on the Executive floor - we thought the ICon to be better.

The Orienten Hotel is in my opinion the very best hotel in BKK, however..... a club(or better) room/suite in any number of hotels within the city would equal or better a superior room in the Orienten.

Nai Lert Hotel is the one we been staying for so long each time we are in Bangkok. 陌ts walking distance to the Central Department Store and the Sky train also . And also very close to the other shoping centres around. And also has a fantastic garden.

If you are on a budget but would like to stay at a very central location and at a hotel with full facilties then you might consider looking at the Ambasador hotel on Sukhumvit. You can get nice rooms there for around 30 USD through one of the online travel agencies. Booking directly with the hotel will most certainly be more expensive.

  • better snorkel?...Ko chang or down south towards phuket ?

we cant decide which is the best overall snorkeling area in Thailand. We have 7 days -which can be broken up....to snorkel and enjoy the beaches of thailand. we thought about liveaboard? or maybe Ko chang?

read alot about Krabi as well?...

what is best for two young who enjoy snorkel and culture..not too much into nightclubs, crowds.....

we are going to be traveling Jan 4th till 11th..

better snorkel?...Ko chang or down south towards phuket ?

If you want to fill a week with snorkelling then you should head to the south of Thailand, not necessarily Phuket but islands around Krabi %26amp; Trang.

You can do a good snorkelling day trip on Koh Chang and you%26#39;ll see loads of fish etc - guaranteed. But unless you have your own boat you arent going to see a huge variety of snorkelling spots.

Not a lot of culture on Koh Chang though - do temples etc in Bangkok or Chiang Mai

better snorkel?...Ko chang or down south towards phuket ?

do you reccomend any cool boutique hotels in krabi? we are not really big resort people. we did find some on Koh chang and Ko tao...

we are definetly interested in more snorkeling and culture crowded beaches, etc.

we have jan 4th till 10th so should we do two different areas or stay in one and take trips from there?

    THANKS!!!

    Stay at Sarojin

For the record, we did report the problem when we first encountered it...they sent housekeeping over at 10:30pm to rectify and then the next day I sat down with Nid and Chailali the housekeeping manager...they listened and Nid took notes. I was never contacted by any of the management...Chailali sent us flowers, no chocolates as claimed by mgmt. But since we wanted to enjoy the rest of the holiday we moved on with out stay. Just to clarify, while we wanted to talk to mgmt and owners during the cocktail reception, we needed to take the 6pm shuttle to town to meet friends for dinner...so we only had 20 minutes and didn%26#39;t want to barge in on the conversations they were engaged in with rants...I found it odd they didn%26#39;t seek us out since they were so well aware of the situation...it%26#39;s a nice property for some but obviously not for all at the prices they charge. We also contacted them when we first made the reservation stating our desire to go scuba diving...when we got there their activities person suggested a 72,000 baht chartering of their catamaran...well over the price of our 3 night stay. We passed and arranged it ourselves in town.

Perhaps our experience and the one before was a fluke...or maybe not and they will be on their toes during your upcoming stays.

    Stay at Sarojin

Tony do not feel you have to justify you comments about how YOU felt about your stay. It is my belief as human beings if we all felt the same way about things then life would be very boring.

I once took a bit of a ribbing about disliking our stay in Riley a place that people rave about. I still offer my opinion on it when people post queries.

    Happy holidays

    Genuine RL Polo and Levis.

    Hi,

I will be in Bangkok next weekend and my brother%26#39;s girlfriend has asked me to get her some genuine Ralph Lauren polo tops. Where can I get RL Polo and Levi%26#39;s in Bangkok that are genuine and are they less expensive than in Europe?

    Thanks,

    Michael.

    Genuine RL Polo and Levis.

Bangkok and most big cities in Thailand have fancy malls just like in Europe and America. You can probably find what you want in one of those fancy yuppie type stores with the overpriced clothing.

Just check with your hotel desk clerk to find out where the nearest mall is. I have passed by Levis clothing stores in several malls, including malls in Khorat and Pattaya.

When I did a quick Google search several addresses came up for Thailand. Would you know the difference between the real thing and a knockoff?

    Koh San Road Restaurants?

I know this is a ';backpacker';/cheaper hotel area, but I was hoping that y%26#39;all can share some insight into a nice restaurant. It would be nice if there was some music, good food, and hopefully a view. My Fiance and I will be getting married a week later in Chiang Mai, but we are spending 3-4 days on Koh San Road prior to heading up there. THANKS MUCHO!

    Koh San Road Restaurants?

Hi PanicFan, We visited Koh San road on our trip back in October. We didn%26#39;t eat there but there were heaps of open air cafe%26#39;s %26amp; restaurants. We loved the feel of Koh San road %26amp; would love to stay there ourselves. CJ

    Koh San Road Restaurants?

There is a really great restaurant very near the Koh San Road where we ate a couple of times. Unfortunately, I can%26#39;t recall the name. It has a small bar area at the front and the trees are lit with white fairy lights. Inside, the centre is open air and there is water cascading down the sides of the restaurant. I%26#39;m not sure my description really does it justice but it felt very special to be there and the food was great. Can%26#39;t really claim it has a view, but I%26#39;m not sure what you would want a view of in the area.

Hey bud, if you are planning on staying near Kao San road area, you will find an lot of good restaurants, asking for a view.... hmmm. Every eve is great for for people watching, I like that view the best, cheap entertainment, and good learning experience. if this is the area you want to stay in, may I recommend the Rambuttri Inn? The prices are low, under $20.00 Can. last year. It has a pool, good security. And it%26#39;s only a 2 blocks away from the night market. Congratulations for the wedding !!!

    Club Andaman April

Hi - I have just read that some people here are staying at the same hotel at the same time as myself and family. Just thought I would say hi and introduce myself. My name is Deborah and I will be with my 3 children ages 17,12 %26amp; 8. I am also staying in the Cottages.

I had such a difficult time choosing my accomodation as I have never been to Thailand - but through this forum my decision was made a little easier. I would appreciate any travel tips as this is quite a big trip for myself and the children and I really dont know what to expect or even what tours etc I can do. Any sugestions would be most welcome.

    Club Andaman April

    Hi Deborah

Welcome to this forum, I%26#39;m sure by the time you go to Phuket, you will be as addicted as the rest of us.

Main tours people do are the Elephant Rehab, Phang Na bay , Phi phi and other island day trips, drives around Phuket and over to Krabi.

Lots more info can be found at the following web sites and reading post trip reports.

    Good luck and happy planning

    Club Andaman April

    Hi Deborah,

yes, we will be at Club Andaman next April 1 - 9 in a couple of Andaman cottages!!

We will have our two boys with us 17 and 16 - are your children girls or boys and what dates will you be there? Our daughter 19 won%26#39;t be with us unfortunately as she will be in uni.

I agree, choosing accommodation is so difficult especially when you don%26#39;t go in low season and there are no special deals being offered!

The only activities we are pretty definite in doing are the elephant rehabilitation centre, the ATV tour (all terrain vehicles) and the Friday night BBQ.

I would really like to do the Hongs by Starlight tour but for the four of us in peak season it will work out pretty expensive.

We will be staying at Bang Tao Bay and Krabi before going to Phuket.

Just let me know if there is any other info I can help you.

Hoping at least some of your dates coincide with ours!

By the way, we also live in Melbourne

    Nicky

    Thanks Lee and NIcky.

I will be at Club Andaman in the cottages also from the 1st of April to the 12th April. I am travelling by myself and 3 kids. I have a 2 daughters one 11and one 16 (who will be 12 and 17 by time of travel) and a son who will be 8 at time of travel.

I have been reading alot of posts here and I am interested in the Elephant Rehab/ Friday BBQ etc.....my kids are pretty active. My girls especially and really looking forward to shopping.....We are spending 2 nights in Bangkok before we get to Phuket to do some shopping. The girls are taking over empty suitcases!!!!!

  • Tedkarma heading to Khao Lak next week - questions?

I%26#39;ll be up in Khao Lak for a day late next week and am happy to field any questions about the area. If you would like to know the progress on a rebuilding resort, how much construction is going on in an area, how the beach is looking somewhere - please ask! Also, I love to try new restaurants. Might the Sports Grill is on the agenda this time.

Generally, I am not assertive enough to demand measurements of bathtubs and to force my way into rooms to measure bed sizes - but anything I can do from outside a room - I am happy to do.

Post it here - and I will respond here.

Tedkarma heading to Khao Lak next week - questions?

Thinking of spending 5 days in Khao Lak early January. My only reservation is the construction, which seems an issue for a number of people. What will the situation be do you think. My shortlist for accomodation is Haadson Resort and BaanKhaolak Resort which are both brand new (if not even finished yet!). The Amandana and the Similana - which i know you have recommended before.

After 20 days of diving and jungle in Borneo and then Cambodia (Phnom Penn and Siem Reap), we want some relaxation. Any thoughts and/or recommendations greatly appreciated.

Tedkarma heading to Khao Lak next week - questions?

Similana is fully booked - so thats out ...anywhere else?

    Thanks again

I guess high season - and even peak season - are soon upon us.

One of my favorite places on Nang Thong Beach - where I tend to stay when not at the Similan is the Nang Thong Bay Resort. It is just a few resorts north of the Baan Khao Lak.

The Baan Khao Lak, when finished, will be even nicer than it was originally. The Haadson - I am not familiar with - so will take a look at it next week and give you a report.

    Hi Tedkarma

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge and time writing reports.

We have booked 5 days at the Baan Khao Lak Resort in May next year. If you have time could you cast your eye over it and give us an overall impression.

    Enjoy your break Thanks again.

I will be happy to do so. Should be up there in the next five days - just depends on what happens on a couple other things.

Look for a report on this board - but I will also put one on the Q %26amp; A Board at www.khaolaklovers.com

I look forward to the BKL opening their restaurant - one of the better ones around pre-tsunami.

    dear ted

we came as a family of 5 to khao lak last new year and stayed at the Ayara villas. One of my daughters has a friend who was badly injured aand lost family members in the tsunami in Khao lak. We had a spiritually uplifting time there and came away in love with the area .

My wife and I plan to return this new year for a fortnight. We loved Ayara-friendly,clean and comfortable with an amazing position-but sadly they cant have us for the whole period. Where would you recommend if anywhere which has their blend of comfort with reasonable prices?

Hope you can help. Many thanks

    George Hitchins

For places that have some similar or very Thai character - take a look at the Baan Krating on the south end of the Nang Thong Beach - GREAT views. And consider also the Similana - lots of Thai character - out on Pakweeb Beach, one of the best beaches around for beachcombing. Both are bungalow style resorts. Baan Krating just bit more upscale than Similana.

After that - Perhaps Baan Khao Lak - just for great location on Nang Thong Beach.

    Hope that helps.

Thank you very much for the amazingly fast response with the info-have checked out their sites and will try to book one. Very much appreciated. If I have problems raising any of them could I ask whether you could get phone nos?

Sorry to butt in here,George, but you can actually book both hotels via Ted%26#39;s own site right here: http://khaolaklovers.com/hotels.htm

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,

    Gary

  • Help us finalise.....

    Hi All,

Our family is staying at the JW Marriot timeshares next week for 10 days. We are renting a car. Where is the best place to stock up on grocery items? We are travelling with 5 kids aged 1 - 11yrs and we usually like to explore around on our own when we travel, can anyone reccomend any must do excursions with or without a tour appropriate of our kids%26#39; ages? They of course want to see/ride the elephants. My husband and son are avid divers, but the rest of us snorkel. The John Gray conoe trip sounds fabulous, but I am guessing my kids are too young? Is there any way to charter a boat for just our family on any of the island trips or the caves? (as not to disturb other people!) Any suggestions are greatly appreicated! Thanks!

    Help us finalise.....

Hi dohaGirl, Tesco lotus %26amp; Big C both have huge grocery departments . The aquarium would be good for the kids. Dino park at Kata centre for dinner lots of fairy lights %26amp; baby elephant is out the front every night. You can buy bananas %26amp; feed it. Ten pin bowling is at the Big C. You could top at the Green man pub for lunch they have a beautiful garden area with kids play area. Promthep cape at the lookout at the top of the stairs there is an elephant shrine.See if the kids can count how many elephants there are. Enjoy your time with your family. CJ

Should we stay on the West or East side of Railey?

    Hi -

My husband and I are going to be in Railey in late December and are trying to decide where to stay. We%26#39;ve heard that the west beach is much nicer but there seems to be only 3-4 places to stay on the west beach and they%26#39;re all over 3,700B (don%26#39;t mind paying for nice places but these don%26#39;t seem that great).

Some nice looking places on the hillside above the east beach seem to be priced much lower. Would love to hear opinions if it is worth it to stay on the west side or if it;is ok to stay on the east side and just walk to the west side.

    Thanks so much.

Should we stay on the West or East side of Railey?

the west beach is where the long tail boats come in from Ao Nang

the east from Krabi .east beach at low tide is mud enough said

but it is such a small area easy to walk from east to west in 2 min. the south or cave beach is the best. Pa nang I think. I stayed in Ao Nang last week took boat to Railey for climbing. If you want good beach%26#39;s have to take boat to Phi Phi or chicken or poda island.

the only way to railey is by long tail boat ,so back pack is best.

Should we stay on the West or East side of Railey?

For rooms it makes no difference at all. The better beaches are on the west side but once night falls the restaurants are better on the east and on the hill If arriving from Krabi Town or the airport you can take a boat from Ao Nam Mao to the east side instead of Ao Nang to the west side.

Thank you both for the tips! My husband and I really appreicate it! We%26#39;re going to look for a place on the east side and just walk to the west during the day for beach time! By the way - we%26#39;re relatively young (29 and 30) and were wondering if you know of fun things to do on Railey - things to do during the day(esp.what beach is the best), good restarants, bars etc. Anyway, just if you have some favorite spots, we%26#39;d love to get your advice since it seems like there%26#39;s not too much written about Railey in our books! Cheers!

going to railey you have to try rock climbing. enough said ,that is why people go to railey oh and the night life. there are many bars and every day posting on the street as too which bar is having a band or party.. for good beach take long tail boat to one of the nearby islands for the day. on the east side the lifestyle is party all night climb all day.

    hi smpuri,

where have you decided to stay on the east side? im having same dilemma, thought id go to railay bay, but it seems expensive for what it is...going in feb

    cheers

Krabi, Ko Phi Phi or Ko Lanta

I am going on my honeymoon in Januray to Thailand and am not sure where to visit. I am deciding between Krabi, Ko Phi Phi, and Ko Lanta. We want a relaxing vacation, but also not too remote. We definitely Iwant beauty as well. f you had six days on the beach where would you go?

We are also looking for a hotel to stay at. We want luxury, but given the fact that we are going during peak season we cannot afford $500+ a night hotels. Any suggestions?

Krabi, Ko Phi Phi or Ko Lanta

Where in Krabi? Ao Nang? as Krabi Town is not anything like what you want. Ko Lanta is the most remote of the three and Ao Nang the least remote and the beach there is no where near as good as that on Ko Lanta and Phi Phi.

Phi Phi has a lot of young people looking for parties and backpackers which apparently turns many honeymooners off the place. I can not tell you about Koh Lanta as I will only be travelling there for the first time in a few weeks. I chose it because of it%26#39;s remote feeling yet it still has a number of restaurants and tourist orientated activities.

I would check out sites like asiarooms.com, sawadee.com and morethailand.com for hotels but I do not see why in Jan you would need to pay anywhere near USD500 for a 5 star resort this is Thailand you may have to pay that on Christmas Eve and New Year but not in Jan.

Krabi, Ko Phi Phi or Ko Lanta

Thank you so much for your info. I think we have narrowed it down to two different hotels. Either the Nakamanda in Krabi or the Sarojin in Khao Lak. Have you stayed at either of these hotels or are you familiar with them? The Sarojin has gotten great reviews and looks like there are some cool things to do nearby. I am not sure about Khao Lak as a whole though. Your thoughts?

I will be sure to check out the site you mentioned. Thank you again for all help.

No I am not I am only familar with Bangkok. Phi Phi, Phuket and Koh Samui this will be my first time travelling to Krabi and Koh Lak may in the future be on the agenda.

    What the heck?

    What is a ladyboy?

I have never heard of this before.

Is it a chick or a dude?

Why would someone want to watch a dude dressed up as a chick?

Wouldn%26#39;t they rather just watch a chick? I don%26#39;t get it.

    What the heck?

    you don%26#39;t get it ?

    get too close, and you will certainly get ';it';

    What the heck?

Well visit Alcazar Show at Pattaya performed by Ladyboys and then you will know why, worth entertainment.

    ';you don%26#39;t get it ?

    get too close, and you will certainly get ';it';';

    -Not cool dude

Let%26#39;s be serious. Ladyboys are what the word says : boys who dress up as a woman (after some gender operations - or also not)

I can tell you there are some real artists between them, so much so, that you could not believe that the babe next to you in the bar is in fact a ... boy.

(I had my Thai girlfriend to ask her opinion on some of them, because I was not sure myself, even after talking some time with such a person - it%26#39;s fun ! )

In Thailand it%26#39;s certainly not regarded as an abnormality: it%26#39;s regarded as an art, and some of that ladyboys even become celebs !

Anyway, most of them are fun, and you should not look down on them: it%26#39;s an other and fascinating culture, Thailand is, and that is just one of it%26#39;s facets.

And it really not anything new, there have been tranvestite shows since god knows when and havent you heard of drag queens !

Most of these shows are very entertaining and asian ones are very well done.

Las Vegas to sydney it%26#39;s happening everywhere, so maybe in your travels to see new and different cultures you might want to check it out. Dude !

i met a lovely l/b on my trip this year ,she had the op so didnt have any tackle (she showed me)--

    very interesting people to talk to---- the correct term for them is ';katoey';

    You%26#39;re right Andy.

The correct spelling is, I think, Khatoy.

Maybe the LE can correct us ?

Andys spelling is correct -the correct pronounciation is, however, somewhat more difficult....um.... ';katoi'; would,I guess, be most understood! Not that I%26#39;ve ';known'; any. Some of them make fabulous maire%26#39;d s though - well known here in Thailand. They are what they are, most extremely pleasant and hey...their choice ';na';?

Well Bangkokgas, if you say that%26#39;s the correct spelling, I guess that%26#39;s it. In my (Dutch-Thay) phrasebook it%26#39;s spelled ';khatoi'; and in internet there are many different spellings - it%26#39;s getting confusing ! :-)

But you are right, about them - I loved talking to them in the open air bars in Pattaya; most of them are so funny.

    talking about getting confused ...

I meant to write of course: ';khatoy'; and ';Thai';...

    got my i and y confused there ... :-((

Ok so we%26#39;re almost ready,we still havent arranged how we%26#39;re getting to Krabi from Phuket but i am hoping we will find a driver?

I have blown all our cash on 5 nights in the tubkaak, and cant wait,i have food allergies tho and i am really worried bout finding food i can eat (i cant have wheat, yeast, sugar, dairy etc) so any advice on somewhere that speaks really good english and could cater for me.....also where these places are in conjunction with the hotel

    I am really nervous!

Also we have no plans for Krabi,we have mr mor booked and going with richard to the rehab centre in Phuket but not planned anything for here...and no funds after paying for the hotel!

5 Nights at the tubkaak, help needed

Don%26#39;t be nervous. You%26#39;ll find a driver very easily to take you from Phuket and once you arrive at Tubkaak yo won%26#39;t want to do anything. Just relax there and enjoying the beach. From there it%26#39;s easy to take excusions and make Kayak along the coastline.

At the hotel there are plenty of staff who speak good English (some even trained by me!!!!!). I would suggest letting them know in advance about you allergies thus giving them time to prepare.

Just been looking at recipes on the net and making note of the names of the ones i can have, should be helpful when we%26#39;re somewhere where i cant find english speaking place etc,and i find you sometimes get told one thing only to find they just were saying yes and no to random questions seemingly!

Xmas presents for teenagers in Bangkok

We have teenage relatives living in Bangkok and would like to send out a small xmas present (money). Is it possible to buy vouchers in the UK that can be used in Bangkok. If vouchers are a no go. Any ideas on how we can transfer the money [拢20] without using the banking system.

Xmas presents for teenagers in Bangkok

Vouchers are usually used for tax reasons, so are not often valid outside their issuing country. There are however International money orders if they still exist - ask at the post office.

The postal system in Bangkok is very reliable, and I confess I would not think twice about sending a twenty pound note inside a christmas card. They can change pounds to Thai Baht anywhere with no problem.

This is not the case everywhere though, for instance I would never trust the Pattaya postal service.

However if you don%26#39;t want to do this, then Western Union has offices everywhere here. You call them up in the UK and give them your credit card details (your bank may also be able to arrange a Western Union transfer), they will tell you the nearest office to your relatives, and you send them a special code number.

They then go to the office with the code number and their ID card to collect.

    Hi

My husband and I have stayed in this hotel many times last time December 2005 will be there again this December we to have just touched 60 you will find this hotel to be in a great location especially for the sky train and MBK and other department stores the staff are friendly and helpful

    Hi oversixties!

I%26#39;m 58, my friend 68, and we%26#39;re going to be at the Pathumwan from 25 Feb - 2 March. When will you be there? I%26#39;ve booked a trip to River Kwai/Tiger Temple through ixplore, an aussie wholesale travel company. It only caters for small groups ie for up to two people it%26#39;s $AU139, (which at current rate is 56 GBP); 3 -5 it%26#39;s 43 GBP. The tour is from 7am - 7pm, including lunch.

Not sure if it can be booked from overseas, but if you want to check it out, the website is ixplore.com.au.

From what I%26#39;ve seen on other tour websites, the price is pretty good.

    Have a good holiday!

    Kathleen

Kathleen - My partner and I will be there from the 25 Feb to the 3 Mar also, and am doing the River Kwai/ Tiger Temple tour but with Adventure World - See you in the bar xx

Kathy, ixplore doesnt only cater for smaller groups, it just gives different prices depending on how many are travelling in your particular party eg: if there are only two of you joing the tour it is $139 per person and if there are between 3 %26amp; 5 in your party joining the tour it gets cheaper per person. They have different vehicles depending on the size of the tour party on each given day. This company is Australian based and as such is more expensive than the Thailand based websites.

    Hi Kristabelle

Yes, it would be good to catch up with another forum member! I%26#39;ll be in Phuket for 11 days first, and they have a really good Friday night social for forum members, which I%26#39;m really looking forward to.

What is the cost of the River Kwai/Tiger Temple tour you%26#39;re going on, and for how many hours? I thought $139 for twelve hours, including lunch, was quite a good price.

Thanks for your info mole - I understand what you mean about tours being cheaper when larger numbers being booked, but I have booked two others with ixplore, and the quote for those states %26#39;seat in coach%26#39;, whereas the River Kwai tour states %26#39;private tour%26#39;.

Whatever, I%26#39;ll just be happy to be going!

Yes they have all the facilities you would expect from a 3/4 star hotel , tour desk included and great location.

Hi Kathy Just saw your message $138 is an excellent price ours is $160, we are doing the opposite to you and doing Phuket last booked into to the Friday Night Social on the 16/3. Wish the holiday was tomorrow but this planning bit is great too

    Hi,

I think it would be cheaper to book your River Kwai tour over there at the hotel I am sure it was cheaper than we were quoted by tour companies here (Aust). Depends I suppose if you are on a tight schedual and need times sorted.

    Hope this helps

    Pauline

Often things are cheaper when you do them on the spot.

However if your time is limited it is good having a pre-paid itinerary as you know your free time is okay for relaxing and you Know you%26#39;ll definitely get to do those must do%26#39;s.

We only have 2 nights in Chiang Mai after originally planning 4, but changing in order to get much cheaper flights if we spend 4 paid nights in Bali in a hotel etc

(asmuch of our trip in june /July 2007 will be timeshare which we have arranged independently)

We are doing an all day 4x4 trip of the Golden triangle on this day and will book it and pay for it in New Zealand so we know we will get to see something in our limited time.

Travel Agents may be more expensive but they can be very helpful and help your trip run more smoothly.

The Holiday Inn is on a remote part of the Island, approx 45 by boat from Phi Phi main town. My boyfriend %26amp; I planned on staying there for 4 nights and left after 2. There was ony one other restaurant that was accessable by foot and the buffet food at the resort wasn%26#39;t great.

Phi Phi Day Trip with small children

    Hi,

Any suggestion on which operator to go with for a full day Phi Phi trip with a 7 year old and a 2 year old. Prefer a larger boat.

I don%26#39;t think the speedboats would suit the two kids (safety wise?)

Any thoughts and / or websites appreciated

Phi Phi Day Trip with small children

    Hi

I think that with2 smaller kids you should rather go by the daily ferry to Phi Phi. It leaves in the norning and returns later on in the afternoon. Because it is much bigger than a speed boat you do not get the constant hitting of the waves as in a smaller boat.

The ferry takes about 2 hrs. if I remember correctly and just goes straight to PP and back so you won%26#39;t explore as much as a speed boat but worth the trip.

    Enjoy.

Phi Phi Day Trip with small children

Our daughter was 7 when we went and coped well with the speedboat but I think a 2 year old might find it a bit tough - you are constantly buffeted against the waves and it is really quite uncomfortable. The ferry sounds like a good option, but you%26#39;ll have to weigh up whether a long ferry trip is worth doing with small children as they might get bored?

Do you know how long it takes via speedboat to get to Phi Phi? We will be staying near the airport, so I guess we would want to depart from up there, versus heading to Patong first.

Is it feasible to leave early in the a.m. but be back at the hotel by late afternoon or, is it a ';whole day'; trip?

Also, any idea on prices for a speedboat trip? I think, if not prohibitive, we would want to take our own charter to give us some more freedom.

    Thanks.

two weeks ago did speed boat trip to Phi Phi from Ao Nang same distance as phuket there was a family with a 2 and 4 yr old they did fine and had a ball. some of the speed boats are big carry up to 35 people. I like the smaller ones with 12 to 15 people. much faster than the bigger ferry boats to me the speed boats are safer depending on captain and tour operator.

Just did the speed boat tour with my two year old. Three engined large boat with about 35 people on board.

He was perfectly fine with it.

Sit at the back and you are less likely to get sea sick and any wave impact is less. The water was pretty calm.

The slower boat can be very full.

Only gripe I would have was the boat was pretty full so my son had to sit on my knee. You don%26#39;t pay though if they are under three.

There was actuallty someone on board with a child well under one who slept most of the time.

Thanks for your responses - will probably go with the speedboat option and put life jackets on the kids enroute. (how long does it take by speedboat? 30 - 45 mins?)

Does anyone have a favourite speedboat operator or firm that they have used?

    Thanx

  • What's the latest on Suvarnabhumi Airport?

Hi there... just wondering if anyone who%26#39;s travelled in or out of Suvarnabhumi Airport in the last week or so can give an update on their experiences?

Initial reports at its opening complained of lack of toilets and lack of air conditioning. I have read tho they they decided not to use conventional air conditioning and went with some kind of underfloor cooling powered by cold water?

Anyway, please post any updates you have. Thanks.

What's the latest on Suvarnabhumi Airport?

Thats strange, while I was at the airport, it was really cold. Supposedly they used some sort of Air Condition that blows only head level because they have these very high ceilings. According to science, hot air rises so its ok just to use these air cons because the cold air will remain at floor level. This process was used to keep electricity costs low since they have such high ceilings. Not sure about the toilets though, but will find out!

What's the latest on Suvarnabhumi Airport?

    Hi there,

We arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport one two separate flights on 12 Nov 06. Temperature seemed fine. It%26#39;s a beautiful structure.

Food court is great, but a little confusing. You buy a card for 500 baht, eat what you want wherever you want, and then when you%26#39;re done, you hand in your card, and receive any mony left on the card. A great system, but when we were there the woman greeting us couldn%26#39;t explain it that well.

I recommend that you NOT get rooked into paying for an airport limosine or any other limo service. Arrivals are on the second floor. Take the escalator down to the first floor and get in cue for a cab. You%26#39;ll pay half what the limo driver charges. From Suvarnabhumi Airport to Kao San Road (centre of city) it should cost no more than 350-400 baht - you%26#39;ll offer to pay the toll charges (25 and 40 baht) and the airport fee (50 baht). The airport limo guys will charge you 900 to 1200 baht and if you have an experience like I did you%26#39;ll get a crappy old Volvo instead of a vehicle you would expect as a limo.

The Suvarnabhumi Airport is a beautiful place. Expect long lineups in the Immigration/Passport Control area.

    Good luck.

Many of the problems at Suv have been ironed out. Luggage belts falied and all luggage had to be hand carried but that has been sorted

AC is a good efficient system I was COLD waithing at the departure gate. Most BIG systems are powered by chilled water. this one seems good next summer will tell.

Distances are long and good walks between gates and immigration on arrivals and gated from departures hall and duty free. there are moving walkways but some people dont know how to use.

Taxi advice good Dont accept offers of limo or taxi in Arrivals.

Go down one floor and join the Q and get a taxi meter . Pay the meter + 50 Tax + 65 Tolls to most places..

Anything else come on back here

Thanks for the heads up on the taxis. Is there an ATM to get some bahts in the Arrivals area -- before heading down to get a taxi?

ATM Machines available after customs on arrivals level

Just look behind you as you come out.of customs

    Unquote

Why do you assume that the locks were broken at Suvarnabhumi?

If your locks were broken you should report it to your airline and to the airport of your departure and arrival.

    mwong3

Just read your post as I came out.

Sorry I see you are reporting something you read.

All I would say is this does happen all over the world and can go undetected for some time as travellers do not want to spend the time at airports filling out paperwork.

But I still add my same comment why did the writer assume it was at Suvarnabhumi. Did he have some proof?

Many times the broken locks are as a result of bad equipment and handling.

I have seen cases open on the belt in baggage claim especially the cloth type and the contents have been packed into a plastic bag.

My advice always is dont use zip cases and dont use cloth cases they are both suspectable to ';natural'; damage by the handling equipment

As well as the ATM machines, are there any money changing booths near the arrivals section? Thanks!

    Thanks for your advice, all.

    Anyone used Andaman Leisure Phuket?

I definately want to do the John Gray starlight trip but i%26#39;m also thinking of booking a Phi Phi trip with Andaman Leisure it seems to cover various locations and lunch and a visit to a monkey beach (so the kids should enjoy it) Has anyone used them and can you tell me what it was like?

    Anyone used Andaman Leisure Phuket?

We just got back from 10 nights in Phuket. We did the John Gray starlight trip - we highly recommend it. We were lucky enough to see a monkey in the wild 1 metre away from our canoe.

We did our Phi Phi island trip with ALP. I was expecting that we would stop at the monkey beach and at least see monkeys, but they drive past the beach from afar and if there are no monkeys visible on the day they keep driving. So at best, you can view them from afar. We saw no monkeys on that trip. The lunch was very basic, but the scenery was great. The snorkelling is great at Khai island, but the other two sites we visited were over-crowded and devoid of wildlife. I don%26#39;t think you can avoid the crowds with any of the companies. Your kids may enjoy the beach stops and snorkelling on this trip. Have a great trip!

    Accommodation Ko Phi Phi Dom

Can anybody recommend some decent accom on Phi Phi Don? My husband and I are going in April and want to stay somewhere in main part of town, not 30 or 40 mins away which is what our travel agent keeps pushing.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

    Accommodation Ko Phi Phi Dom

You will then want to stay at Tongsai Bay. Check out sawadee.com and morethailand.com for rates and check out maps as you want to be within close proximity of this Bay. Maybe check out Phi Phi Hotel or Banyan Villa cannot reccommend either to you until I have travelled there which will be in a few weeks so I can report back.

    Accommodation Ko Phi Phi Dom

Phi Phi Hotel is just a bed in a room with a TV but the location is brilliiant. You can walk to all the restaurants and bars. I wouldn%26#39;t reccomend you stay there but if you can get something close by - go for it.

    Handicraft - silver

I would like to visit handicraft villages, especially places where silver jewels are made. Can anyone please suggest if this is worth visiting and if so, where I can find those places and how to get there from Chiang Mai?

    Thanks!

    Handicraft - silver

Hi Kata1, We found 3 wholesale shops selling their silver jewellery just by walking the streets %26amp; exploring. I don%26#39;t have the adress but they where in the same road as the Ancient temple. Someone may know the name of the road.CJ

    Handicraft - silver

Long ago there was a village specialized in silver handicraft, it was located just outside Chiang Mai city, right across the Chiang Mai Gate.

Today the village has been absorbed by an expanding city, but it gave its name to a street where you can still find silverware shops and workshops. It is Wualai Road, starting at Chiang Mai Gate.

On Saturdays the street is closed to traffic for the weekly open market.

This is also the street where you find the %26#39;Tri Yaan Naa Roos Colonial House%26#39; a small boutique hotel with a very nice atmosphere.

    Hi

If you want to visit the silversmiths on Wulai road then it is best to go in the mornings and wander the small sois (lanes)off Wualai road and you can find the people actually making the siver by listening to the clanging sounds. Most producers are delighted to have you stop and watch as they do not get many visitors as wualai is still mostly producing for the local market.

The street is closed only in the Saturday late afternoon but best to go another time to see the silver workers producing their goods as they finish working by then. Wualai - means a Jersy style or patterned cow.

Futher out of town on the chiang mai - hangdong hi-way near the Sumung turn off is the old ceramic village also worth a visit and it is still producing pottery

    Hi all,

thanks for the tips! Doc, the hotel you mentioned, is it worth staying there for night or two? It sounds wonderful. I tried to google the name of the hotel to find the price and other info but with no success. Do they have any webpage? Can you please write me if this area is close to night bazaar or other interesting places to visit in Chiang Mai?

Rearding Wualai road silver handicraft visit, what time in the morning should I go there to see the silver workers?

    Thanks again!

Try this spelling- Tri Yaan Na Ros Colonial House

It is a closer spelling and should work!

It is not near the night bazaar and listed on trip hotel pages.

If you like off the beaten track places but walking distance to night bazaar try ';Puripunn Baby Grand Boutique Hotel'; higher priced but in a different class.

Any time after 8:00am the silversmiths start to work.

Hi, Kata 1, you know, in China, there are some Miao ethnic villages, all the people there are good at making silver things. Silver play the most important role of their life. According to their traditional custom, women always wear numerous silver items from their head to feet, such as hairpins, earrings, bracelets... Want to know more about this, you can go galleriapangea.com/jewelry/鈥roducts.html to have a look.

  • Gem Stones

I recently went to Lambert Industries on Soi 17/Silom Road. This is a place which is recommended in the Luxx guide and in Lonely Planet.

The business has changed hands. I decided against buying anything as I just felt not comfortable with the service. Especially, as my questions with regard to color enhancement and origin of stones were mostly ignored. As I know from my German dealer, it is unethical not to mention any treatment of the stone when the question is asked.

I would be interested if anybody paid a visit to Lambert recently and what impression you had.

The new owner (Eric) is not a gemmologist by trade. The other person (Richard) was rather unwilling to answer questions.

    Gem Stones

IMHO you ahould be careful when buying gemstones. It is best ti pay a bit more and get a certified stone

The certificate will tell you alot about the stone.

There are a couple of labs around in Bangkok

    Gem Stones

Princesssharon - tksfor yr reply. You recommended Lambert not long ago if I remember correctly. Yewt it appears that you don%26#39;t know Lambert gems.

I%26#39;m well aware of the danger to end up with a fake. fortunately, I have some knowledge of gems yet some properties require a lab. By the way, it is unethical of any gem dealer not to point out if the stone has been treated in whatever way. this is especially the case when the customer specifically asks about enhancement etc.

I know a number of people who bought from lambert before change of ownership. Lambert has been known for their honesty until now.

Lambert was very reliable. What happend is that it has changed ownership.

The problem is that in Thailand, many dealers consider heat treatment as natural

Most stones are treated and the owner doesn%26#39;t seem to educate the public.

It is best to buy a certified stone.

As for Lambert, i don%26#39;t think i have recommended them to anyone.

I do recommend shops at Gems Tower and Jewelry Trade Center

and i do ask for the stones to be certified.

what stones are you looking for? Maybe i can help

I%26#39;m looking for pink Spinel from Burma and bi-color tourmaline. I got 2 dealers on my list which I plan to visit next week. One is in Sita Bldg. on Mahesak, the other in JTC. I%26#39;m not yet fixed on size but it shld be around 2 ct. for the Spinel.

Thanks for yr offer perhaps we can do business.

    Hi All:

Interesting feedback. I was originally pointed to lambert by the US Embassy when I was a wayward traveler and thought I had bought stones which were fake. Lambert reveiwed my purchases and explained how to buy and what to look for and ultimately educated me on the art of jewelry buying. They did this for no charge and I believe still do so today.

Since then, I have bought at Lambert industries for years and continue to do so. The ownership has changed hands but all original people who have been there for years are still there. Including the old owner, who has a desk and continues to provide assistance. Eric was the first one to announce that he was not a gemologist when I last met him(nor was the old owner who was an attorney) and has made many positive changes to the business. The place looks great, has an amazing stock and uses only natural light to choose the stones. A rarity in bangkok.

Lambert is one of the only businesses that still offers a full refund even in a year or two if you don%26#39;t like your stones. How many businesses in Bangkok offer that?? On two occasions I have returned gifts and never had a problem. Lambert Educates about color enhancement and in all my dealings in over 10 years has always been upfront, honest and informative. Richard, who is mentioned, I believe actually teaches about gems at AIGS (Bangkok gem school) and has an excellent and honest reputation. There are also now 3 other gemologists that I am aware of who can provide a variety of assistance as well ranging from design to stone facts.

Sad that you did not have a positive experience, but I would give them another chance. As a big shopper myself, I would not judge a place on only one visit. Especially one such as this.

As you can tell, I am a long time customer and Lambert has been a haven in the busy pace of Bangkok and always one of the few names to trust. I still do. They continue to provide excellent gems at good honest value and appear to be poised to grow.

I must say that I was very surprised to read about your experience at Lambert. I have had a very different experience than you, one more similar to the last post. I have bought from them a few times (rings, pearls, a pendant and a custom made bracelet) and have been extremely impressed with the quality, level of service and I consider it a place I trust when shopping for jewlery in BKK.

In my experiences, I have found the people at Lambert to be very up front and they seemed pleased to educate me about color enhancement of stones as well as other things. They guarentee their stones and offer a full refund without any time limit, which I have never heard of at other places in BKK, KUL and throughout asia. The staff answered all of my questions and spent a great deal of time with me, even though my purchases were not incredibly expensive. One woman that I dealt with Elzbeth(?) who I believe is from Europe originally, was particularly informative and helpful as was Eric, the new owner.

I know that the Luxx guide has very high standards and I have always been impressed with thier recommendations. Sounds like you unfortunately had one disappointing experience, but I personally think this is the place to shop while in BKK and would give them another chance. Did you contact them about your experience?

To get a guarentee, offer for a refund, and receive open honest information about stones is a true find in asia. It also makes me personally comfortable to deal with people who are used to doing business in Europe and the US and are used to the high expectations and standards of customers. I personally will keep going back there when I go to BKK.

I don%26#39;t know when you last visited Lambert. I%26#39;ve been there several times recently. It wasn%26#39;t just me who had a negative impression. My friend shared my opinion. I certainly wasn%26#39;t offered any advice and only evasive answers to my questions regarding enhancement. Never mind, there are other reliable dealers in BKK who also offer a money back and return guarantee. If Lambert was the only reliable source then there would be endless queues. For some reason foreign professional buyers don%26#39;t seem to buy from Lambert.

The Swiss lady is not a gemologist but a jewellery designer.

Certificates which come with the gem mean little in BKK. You have to get your own from GIA or AIGS.

For those who think that there are only enhanced stones out there, there are still non enhanced ones as well. It matters to me not to buy treated stones.

It was very obvious that Lambert doesn%26#39;t seem to be keen on buyers who have too many questions, but on the guy who buys quickly.

    Jemima,

You seem like you are out to get people to avoid Lambert. Do you have some personal connection to another place or did you have some other horrible experience that you did not mention in your first post? I guess we have had pretty different experiences and I will leave it at that.

As I mentioned before, I have visited there many times and know many other people who have been extremely pleased with the quality and professionalism of Lambert. I have often dealt with Elsbeth, who is wonderful. She IS a gemologist, and told me that she has been for the past 6 years. She is also a director in the company. Did you ask her and she told you something different?

I don%26#39;t get the same impression as you, that Lambert is ';for the quick buyer'; I have never felt rushed and many of my purchases involved design and stones that they did not have in stock and I had to come back. I have also been told that a big part of their business is wholesale and people who buy quantity, but I really can only speak about my own experiences.

As I mentioned previously, the last time I was there we spoke about the whole treated stone issue and they were very upfront and offered to show me stones that had not been treated at all.

Anyway, I will leave this post as my last. I don%26#39;t usually write so much about one place, but I was just surprised since my experience has been so different. I am sure others who will buy in BKK will check out a number of places including Lambert and can decide for themselves.
