Baan Rim Pak group

Hi, there

I am struggling with the choice among three seeemingly fantasic restaurants in the Baan Rim Pak group:

Baan Rim Pak itself - Thai food.

Joe%26#39;s Downstairs - seems to be a trendy bar

Da Maurizio - Italian

We will have enough Thai street food in Bangkok before we go - so it%26#39;s not necessary we have to have Thai food just because we are in Thailand. Plus, I was a restauranteur myself (specialzed in Asian food) so stir fry is common to me. Very hard to get the wow factor in this category for me... :-)

That said, I AM well awared of all the awards Baan Rim Pak gets and the romantic setting it has. Trouble is, so are the other 2 restaurants. I am very fond of the decor, the ambiance of Joe%26#39;s Downstairs, even their menu do not seem to be as exotic. Finally, the Italian place, Da Maurizio, sounds like a great way to take a time out from the whole week of Thai food and again, who can complain about that view ...

Anyone has prior experiences on these places? BTW, if you have suggestions on other places as well, please don%26#39;t hesitate!

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Have visited Baan Rim Pa on 3 occasions, everytime it is excellent, actually going this Saturday for my 40th, could not think of many better places to go. The deep fried honeyed chicken is up there with my favourite dishes in the world.

It is not cheap by Thai standards, about 5000 bht for dinner, you can spend less, or a lot more, but we find it a great resturant. Great setting, book to make sure you get a table close to the balcony with a view of the bay.

Hi tt16888,

I took my wife to Baan Rim Pa for her 30th birthday in March, and I must be honest and say that it was the most disappointing dining experience of our holiday.

The views are obviously superb, and the ambience was nice, however we found the food to be bland and ordinary, and we were pretty much rushed in and out in an hour, which is not what I expect from a %26#39;top%26#39; restaurant.

My top priority when I go out for a meal is the quality of the food, not the environment and for that reason I would not rush to go back, however we may have just picked a bad night.

This experience put us off trying the Italian restaurant although I have heard it is very good.

Regards,

James.

The last comment about the food at Baan Rim Pa is interesting. We have been a couple of times trying both set menus and a la carte and found the food good, but nothing special. We have eaten better in Thai restaurants in Bangkok, Hua Hin and Phuket.

On our last visit I was disappointed by being served dishes which we specifically asked to be not too spicy and receiving them VERY hot. Surely in a restaurant of this calibre and price range this shouldn%26#39;t be a problem.

The ambience and setting are spectacular.

We found Da Maurizio excellent and the setting wonderful. Just be careful on he steep and dark steps!

Hi there

Thinking about going to Baan Rim Pa for a special occasion - but just wondering how much it is for a meal there. There will be a group of us you see and various budgets. Is it about 5,000 baht a head!!? Or is this the average price for a couple.

Even if so it%26#39;s still very expensive for Thailand - is it really worth it!?

I have already contributed to this thread. My observations about the food at Baan Rim Pa appear to be similar to at least a couple of other opinions (a bit disappointing). However I was amazed about the quote of 5000 bahts (per person or couple?).

We were at both B.R.P. and Da Maurizio in February 2006. At Baan Rim Pa I paid 2870 bahts for me and my wife. Admittedly she had 2 glasses of wine and I a couple of beers. We had two entrees,3 main dishes(with the appropriate rice dishes) and 2 coffees. A few drinks before dinner and a relatively high priced bottle of wine could easily run this up, but 5000 bahts, even per couple seems outrageous.

The bill at Da Maurizio came to about 3800 bahts for two. The western (Italian) dishes are more expensive and you could easily spend 5-6000 bahts/couple if you don%26#39;t go mad on the wine.

The setting of both the restaurants is gorgeous and shouldn%26#39;t be missed.
